Yaesu FT-65R 144/440 Dual-Band Rugged Handheld Transceiver — 5W
Product description
This Yaesu handheld is a VHF/UHF commercial‑grade dual‑band transceiver designed for portable, rugged use. The compact housing measures W 2.1” x H 4.1” x D 1.2” (52.5 x 104.5 x 31 mm) and is built to withstand demanding environments, meeting IP54 dust/water protection and MIL‑810 C, D and E shock and vibration criteria.
Audio and RF performance are emphasized: the large front speaker produces a powerful, clear 1 watt of audio output and the transmitter can deliver up to 5 watts of RF power from the compact chassis. Three transmit power settings are available (High 5 W / Mid 2.5 W / Low 0.5 W) so users can balance range and battery life. The package ships with a 1,950 mAh Li‑ion battery pack that provides more than nine hours of operation under typical use; an optional high‑capacity 2,500 mAh battery (SBR‑26LI) can extend run time to roughly 11.5 hours. A rapid charger (SBH‑22) is included to speed turnarounds when using compatible battery packs.
Convenience and field features include four user‑programmable Quick Recall Keys (QRK), a large white LED flashlight, an alarm and a Quick Home Channel function for emergency signaling. Scanning options cover Programmed VFO Scan, Memory Scan, Priority Channel Scan and Weather Alert Scan; WX channels carry a “Severe Weather” alert in the US configuration. VOX operation is supported with an optional earpiece microphone (SSM‑512B) and the radio can be programmed from a PC using an optional cable (SCU‑35).
Additional capabilities: transceiver‑to‑transceiver cloning via optional cloning cable (SCU‑36), an FM broadcast receiver, ARTS (Automatic Range Transponder System), DTMF, and CTCSS/DCS tone operation. Power management and protection features include Busy Channel Lock‑Out (BCLO), a battery saver mode, Automatic Power‑Off (APO), and a Transmit Time‑Out Timer (TOT) with duty‑cycle timing entries as documented in the manual.

Sturdy unit but returned due to antenna fault
The radio arrived well packed and feels solid. The menu can be confusing at first. I experienced an internal antenna connection issue affecting RX/TX and had to return it, but I’ll order another since the design is otherwise very good.

Best range and reliability I've owned
Compared to several other handhelds I’ve used, this one has superior audio and RF reach. We managed clear comms over many miles with no line of sight. Programming is the only frustration; I bought the PC cable to simplify it.

Rugged and well‑thought design
Initially looked like a budget model, but it outperforms similarly priced units. Display and signal meter are excellent; audio is clear at moderate levels. Squelch and scan speed could use tuning, and the factory whip antenna is surprisingly good.
