GreatNeck 8 oz Ball Peen Hammer — Hickory-Handled Metalworking Tool
Product description
What’s included and basic build: The tool is an 8-ounce ball peen hammer supplied with a genuine hickory wood handle. The head features the rounded peen for shaping and the flat face for driving. It’s a compact hand tool intended for tasks that require control rather than heavy blows.
Head construction and finish: Both striking faces are made from drop-forged steel and the head is heat-treated for durability. The metal is polished and given a clear protective coat to help resist rust and surface corrosion over time, keeping the faces smooth for consistent strikes.
Handle and fastening: The handle is crafted from authentic hickory, chosen for its strength and shock-absorbing properties. Dual steel wedges are used to lock the head firmly in the handle’s eye; the wood also helps reduce transmitted vibration for more comfortable use during repetitive strikes.
Intended uses and sizing: At 8 ounces this ball peen is sized for riveting, shaping and straightening unhardened metals, bending thin sheet metal, and light punch or chisel work. It’s a versatile choice for mechanics, metalworkers, machinists, and hobbyists who need a precision-balanced tool for detail work rather than heavy forging.
Manufacturer and support: GreatNeck, a hand tool maker founded in 1919, produces this model to combine practical design with durability. The brand backs its workmanship and materials with a long-standing lifetime tool promise against defects.

VerdictThis compact ball peen hammer blends a traditional hickory handle with a drop-forged, heat-treated steel head for reliable light-duty metalwork and general shop tasks. At 8 ounces it excels at controlled strikes — finishing, riveting, bending thin sheet metal, and chisel work — but lacks the mass for heavy forging. The head is polished and clear-coated to slow corrosion, and dual steel wedges secu

Useful midweight for assembly
Solid midweight hammer for finishing nails, dowels, and delicate assembly. Not heavy enough for serious metalworking, but that's expected. Good quality for the money.

Handle grip feels odd
Handle lacks the usual end taper, making it feel awkward to hold. Otherwise it functions as expected.

Not domestically made
I expected a US-made tool from the brand's image, but the hammer is manufactured in China. I avoid China-made items when possible.

Works fine, a touch light
Performs fine and seems sturdy. A bit lighter than I prefer — my oversight since weight was listed — which slightly lessened my satisfaction.

Head arrived loose — needed rework
Could've been a decent hammer, but the head arrived loose and appears mounted incorrectly. The wedge wasn't driven fully, so plan to refit the head before use.
