Protein-Packed Chocolate Overnight Oats with Greek Yogurt

These thick and creamy chocolate overnight oats are the breakfast I wake up dreaming about. Made with Greek yogurt, each jar delivers a satisfying balance of protein and fiber — about 18 g of protein and 6 g of fiber per serving — without using protein powder. Make five jars in about 15 minutes and enjoy a ready-to-eat chocolate breakfast all week.

During my first pregnancy I developed a huge sweet tooth — especially at breakfast — and that preference stuck. These chocolate overnight oats have the indulgent, spoonable flavor of a treat while still providing balanced nutrition to keep you full throughout the morning. They pair creamy Greek yogurt with rolled oats, chia seeds and unsweetened cocoa powder for real chocolate flavor without sliding into dessert territory.

Kids and adults alike tend to love these. My own children are only somewhat enthusiastic about plain oats, but when they see this chocolate version with a few fun toppings they eat every last bit. A handful of mini chocolate chips, fresh berries, or a drizzle of nut butter turns them into a quick, crowd-pleasing breakfast or snack.

Key Ingredients That Make These Chocolate Overnight Oats the Best

Unsweetened cocoa powder: Using cocoa powder, rather than melted chocolate or chocolate milk, gives a true chocolate flavor without making the oats overly sweet. Cocoa also contributes a small amount of additional fiber. Be mindful of the quantity: too much unsweetened cocoa can taste bitter and dry. I recommend three tablespoons for rich chocolate flavor while keeping the oats smooth and balanced.

Plain Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt boosts protein and adds a thick, mousse-like creaminess. It contributes roughly 10 g of protein per serving and prevents the slimy texture that can come from using only milk and oats. I prefer plain yogurt so you can control sweetness.

Chia seeds: Chia seeds thicken the mixture as they absorb liquid, improving texture while adding fiber and omega-3 fats. They’re an easy way to increase both creaminess and nutritional value.

Old-fashioned rolled oats: The oat variety matters. Old-fashioned rolled oats retain a bit of chew after soaking, which contrasts nicely with the thick chocolate cream. Quick oats become very soft and can lose texture in this recipe.

Description

These thick and creamy chocolate overnight oats are the breakfast I dream about. Made with Greek yogurt, each jar is full of protein and fiber — a filling, balanced start to your day. Make five jars in about 15 minutes and keep them refrigerated for quick breakfasts or snack options all week.

Ingredients

    • 2 cups milk of choice
    • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
    • ¼ cup maple syrup (adjust to taste)
    • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
    • 1 ½ cups old-fashioned rolled oats
    • 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ¼ cup chia seeds
    • ½ tsp salt

Topping ideas:

  • Fresh raspberries or diced strawberries with mini chocolate chips
  • Mini chocolate chips, sliced banana and a drizzle of peanut butter
  • Blueberries, walnuts and mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Add the milk, Greek yogurt, maple syrup and vanilla to a large mixing bowl. Stir in the oats, cocoa powder, chia seeds and salt. Whisk until fully combined and no cocoa clumps remain.
  2. Divide the mixture evenly between five sealable jars or place in one large airtight container. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, so the oats and chia seeds can absorb the liquid and thicken.
  3. When ready to serve, add your preferred toppings and enjoy cold. If you like a slightly sweeter, milk-chocolate flavor, stir in a little extra maple syrup before refrigerating.

Notes

Toppings: You can add toppings before refrigerating if you prefer ready-to-eat jars, but expect softer, sunk-in toppings because the mixture is fairly liquid when first portioned. If presentation matters, add toppings just before serving.

Sweetness: These oats lean toward dark chocolate flavor. Increase maple syrup to suit a sweeter preference.

Storage: Store in the refrigerator in sealed jars or containers for up to 5 days.
