Whitman Lincoln Memorial Cent Coin Folder, 1959–1998 (Volume 1)
Product description
This folder is sized to accept Lincoln Memorial cents produced from 1959 through 1998, accommodating the full Memorial reverse run in one volume. It opens fully for effortless inspection of pages and folds down to a space-saving 6" x 7 1/4" to tuck neatly onto a bookshelf. The cover is rendered in Whitman's federal blue and the art and lettering are printed in contrasting metallic tones. An informational page is included, and short identification notes are printed beneath each coin aperture to help identify dates and varieties. No coins are supplied with this folder.
The Lincoln cent was introduced in 1909 to mark the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The obverse has carried Lincoln's portrait since its debut, while reverse designs have changed over the decades — from the original wheat ears to the Memorial reverse used from 1959 to 2008 and later to the shield motif. Typical composition for most Lincoln cents has been approximately 95% copper with the remainder tin and zinc, which contributed to the coin's characteristic weight and color. A notable exception occurred in 1943, when cents were struck on zinc-coated steel due to wartime copper needs; those 'steel pennies' are lighter and silver-colored compared with the usual copper examples.
